Volunteers’ Week 1- 12th June is a great way to commemorate and recognise the amazing contribution of millions of volunteers across the country. Volunteering involves using one’s energy, talents and resources to make a difference and is something that most of us would have experienced some point in our life — whether it’s participating in a bucket collection outside a supermarket or helping out at a soup kitchen. It’s unanimous to say that helping others and doing good increases our self-esteem, benefiting our psychological, spiritual and emotional well-being.
The great thing about volunteering is that although it is synonymous with giving, there are so many things you actually gain from the experience! Volunteering provides you with numerous opportunities to acquire new skills, experience and knowledge, developing your professional and personal skills and improving job prospects in the future. However, volunteering is not just for those with time to spare, but also for those with a busy lifestyle or demanding job, allowing it to be a form of recreation.
As a one of the leading Muslim charities in the UK, we at AKF value the time and dedication of all of our fantastic volunteers and recognise their efforts in making a difference to some of the world’s most impoverished communities. Our volunteers get involved in all aspects of our charity work, from event hosting and campaign development to fundraising and on-the-ground relief distribution.
‘I love the work that Al-Khair Foundation does: helping the poor and needy around the world. I’m interning at Al-Khair, as I want to be a part of that amazing mission!
Al-Khair has a lovely and highly talented team, and I get the opportunity to learn new skills from the team all the time and constantly work on various exciting projects. I also enjoy interacting with wonderful new people, from different walks of life. It’s a pleasure to be a part of Al-Khair!’ – Mohibul Haque, AKF Intern
‘I like what the organisation does, and I like that fact I am helping people’ – David Palmer, AKF Volunteer
Our past and recent on-going projects where volunteers have made invaluable contributions include, ‘#LetsWarmBritian’ – where volunteers assisted in providing food, blankets and clothes during our winter 2015/16 campaign; our on-going emergency relief programme in Greece where volunteers have been supplying refugees with fresh nutritious food on a daily basis; ‘The Grand Walk’ – our recent charity walk from Scotland to London where volunteers from across the country participated in the walk, making it a huge success; and our ‘#Schools4Gaza’ project where volunteers have been engaging with schools across London to raise money to help provide education for orphans in Gaza.
‘Being a part of AKF’s inspiring projects to enhance the lives of the poor has reminded me that no sacrifice is too big when it comes to helping those in need’ – Tahina, AKF Intern
