As the Rohingya Crisis started to splash across our screens on the mainstream media, an awareness and fundraising dinner was arranged within a matter of a few weeks, to inform the pubic of Al-Khair’s efforts in providing aid and relief to the refugees as they flee Myanmar onto Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand.
The event was an emotional affair, with Quran recitation and hard hitting poetry by Brother Hassen Rasool, a breakdown of the plight of the people of Myanmar over the past 50 years by Sister Yvonne Ridley and a speech cut short only by by the speaker’s own emotional attachment to the crisis.
Brother Dil Mohammad broke down during his speech, revealing that even after his freedom and his settling in the UK, his campaigning and activism, he is still unable to change the circumstances of his parents and family. Brother Rayan Mahmud took to the stage to console our dear brother. The audience then watched a recorded message from Imam Qasim on his travels and his experience in the Rohingya refugee camp in Malaysia. Together Alhamdulillah we raised over £20,000 for the needy refugees fleeing Myanmar to Malaysia.
