What is Fitrana

Fitrana, also known as Zakat al–Fitr, is a specific type of charity that is obligatory for Muslims at the end of Ramadhan, before the Eid prayer. It is a form of charity given to the poor and needy to ensure that they can participate in the celebrations of Eid al-Fitr with dignity and joy.

Why Give Fitrana?

The purpose of Fitrana is to purify the fasting person from any indecent act or speech and to help the poor and needy celebrate Eid with dignity. By giving Fitrana, Muslims demonstrate their commitment to social justice and solidarity, ensuring that everyone can share in the joy of Eid. It acts as a form of purification for the fasting person and provides relief to those who are less fortunate, allowing them to partake in the festivities without worry.

Who can give Fitrana?

Every Muslim who has the means to do so is required to give Fitrana, regardless of age or gender. The head of the household is responsible for paying Fitrana on behalf of themselves and their dependents, including children and any other dependents. This inclusivity ensures that the obligation is fulfilled collectively and benefits a broader section of society.

Fitrana is given as a small amount of staple food or its monetary equivalent. The amount is typically enough to provide a meal for a needy person. It is usually given during the last days of Ramadhan, before the Eid prayer, to ensure that the recipients can benefit from it in time for the celebrations. The food or money is distributed to the poor and needy within the community or through charitable organizations. The calculated amount varies slightly based on local customs and the cost of staple foods, but it generally equates to the cost of one meal.

This verse underscores the importance of giving from what Allah has provided, highlighting the broader Islamic principle of generosity and support for those in need.

Fitrana is a beautiful expression of compassion and solidarity. It reminds Muslims of their duty to care for the less fortunate and to share their blessings with others. By giving Fitrana, Muslims not only purify their own fasting but also bring joy and relief to those in need. It is a powerful way to strengthen the bonds within the community and to make the celebrations of Eid truly inclusive and meaningful for everyone.
