Shelters and Construction

Shelter is a basic human need. Al-Khair Foundation vulnerable families with dignity and care. We protect widows, orphans and the homeless by providing shelter.

According to UN-Habitat that yet at the end of 2015, over 100 million people remain homeless, while almost 1-in-4 people on the planet — more than 1.6 billion — live in inadequate informal settlements that are unsafe, overcrowded and lack basic services such as water and sanitation.

Safe and decent housing is a fundamental right recognised in a number of international human rights instruments, and is often a precondition for the enjoyment of several other human rights. To name a few, it protects individuals from adverse weather, thereby ensuring good health and wellbeing, facilitates the possibility of earning a living, and promotes private and family life.

One of Al-Khair Foundation’s biggest areas of work is our emergency relief activities, and part of that is providing temporary shelter to Internally Displaced Peoples (IDPs) affected by war or natural disasters. For instance, in May 2016 when Cyclone Roanu devastated the southern region of Bangladesh, we built 25 houses in Cox’s Bazar to house those affected.

We are also very active in providing long-term solutions to homelessness, and have constructed model villages in several countries around the world including Kenya, Pakistan and Togo. Such building projects often consist of not just homes, but education and healthcare facilities as well.
